Bridging The Gap Project is a health initiative of Ebenezer Church Foundation. Ebenezer received and has completed a four-year matching grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through their Local Initiative Funding Partner's Program in support of HIV/AIDS care coordination and counseling services for African Americans within Indianapolis and Marion county. The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis, a major proponent in the fight against HIV/AIDS, served as the local nominating grantmaker for this project.

Overall Goal: To increase HIV counseling and testing in the African-American Community and to improve and expand access to care services for them.
Why is this service needed? As with many other health conditions, African-Americans are disproportionately impacted by HIV and AIDS.  African Americans account for 32% of AIDS cases in Indiana though we are only 8% of the population.  In 2004, there were 7,531 cases of AIDS and 4,094 cases of HIV reported in Indiana.  Of those AIDS cases, 33% were African-American males and 49% were African-American females.  Of those HIV cases, 26% were African-American males and 44% were African-American females.

Ebenezer M.B. Church has been on the cutting edge with ministries of social justice in the African-American community. Ebenezer has been providing HIV prevention activities and programs to the African-American community for more than 6 years. During this time frame they have focused on providing HIV education and prevention programs for ministers, church leaders, church members, with a special emphasis on working with youth.

Get Involved! In conjunction with the American Red Cross, Ebenezer provides instruction on the HIV Basic Facts and the African-American Fundementals.  We teach courses and certify those who complete the training. Through these efforts Ebenezer has been successfully raising the level of HIV/AIDS awareness, HIV prevention and treatment, and the factors that put people at risk so they can make informed and healthy choices and pass along correct information to others in the community.  Call us, we'd love to educate you, your church or community group.

With the rise of new HIV infections predominantly in  the African-American community and the disparity of services for the same, Ebenezer has risen to the challenge to establish a project whose objective is to
Bridge the Gap. Therefore, funding for this project will allow Ebenezer to build upon their success and expand the infrastructure to increase services and access to a full range of services for the African-American community.
